The Christmas Song

"The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire)" is the name of a classic Christmas song, written in 1944 by Mel Tormé and Bob Wells.

The Nat King Cole Trio first recorded the song, early in 1946; at Cole's behest (and over the objections of his label, Capitol Records), a second recording was made the same year utilizing a small string section, and this version became a massive hit on both the pop and R&B charts. Cole re-recorded the song in 1953 and again in 1961, using the same arrangement with a full orchestra; the latter recording is regarded by many as definitive and still gets heavy radio airplay each Christmas season.

The song has been covered by numerous artists since, including Ella Fitzgerald, Vince Guaraldi, The Jackson 5, The Duprees, Daryl Hall & John Oates, Barbra Streisand, Tony Bennett, George Strait, Luther Vandross, Donna Summer, Gloria Estefan, The Carpenters, Christina Aguilera, Natalie Cole, Jessica Simpson, Michael Buble, The Supremes, Celine Dion, Frank Sinatra, The Temptations, Air Supply, Englebert Humperdinck (singer), Henry Mancini, Hootie & the Blowfish, Johnny Mathis, The Manhattan Transfer, Michael Bolton, Al Jarreau, Kenny Rogers, Percy Faith, Bing Crosby, Kimberly Locke, Glen Campbell, Ray Conniff, Martina McBride, Chicago (band), Toni Braxton, Stevie Wonder and its co-writer, Mel Tormé. Christina Aguilera's cover of the song, produced by Thunderpuss 2000 and Ron Fair, was released as a Christmas single and later included on her album My Kind of Christmas. It was released on November 23, 1999 and peaked at number eighteen on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, becoming Aguilera's first single to not hit number one.

The song was used extensively in the Wong Kar-wai movie 2046 starring Tony Leung Chiu-Wai among a cast of Asia's finest actors.
