The words and music to “Come, All Ye Shepherds” originated in Czechoslovakia (author unknown). The lyrics were translated, from what was believed to be 12th century Latin, into English by Mari Ruef Hofer in 1912. Music was added in the 15th Century and was adapted by Thomas Helmore (1811-1890) in 1854. Helmore graduated from Oxford in 1845. He was ordained in the Anglican Church and became vice-principal and precentor at St. Mark’s College, Chelsea, where he served 35 years. In 1846 he was appointed master of the choristers in the Chapel Royal.
