The music to “All my Heart this Night Rejoices” was composed by J.G.Ebeling (1637-1676). Johann Georg Ebeling was born in Germany and in 1662 became the cantor of the St. Nicholas Church in Berlin when the Minister was Paul Gerhardt (1607-1676). The German words were translated into English in 1853 by Catherine Winkworth in a collection called Lyra Germanica. It was an instant success, and went into 23 editions. Winkworth’s work is one of the principal means by which the great German chorale tradition of the sixteenth through eighteenth centuries has been incorporated into English-language worship
